Why have two "z"s anyway?

Q: Is it my "given" name? 
A: It's on my license.

No, it's not short for anything (if it IS, tell me!) I can't find ANYTHING about where the name "Buzz" came from or if it's just a nickname like "Sparky" or "Fingers" or "Racer X". I have heard that Edwin (as in Aldrin) or Burgess (as in Meridith) may be close, but not that close.
